Joshua

The children of Israel were freed from Egyptian bondage. Moses brought them to the land of Canaan where they spied the land. Ten spies returned a faithless report. But Joshua and Caleb brought a faithful report. Because of their failing faith, Israel had to journey through the desert for 40 years.

Joshua became a brilliant military leader and had a strong spiritual influence. His success was his submission to God. When God spoke, he listened and obeyed.

Joshua's physical journey is a pattern of our spiritual journey with God. He calls us out of the bondage of our sin and shows us the promised spiritual land. But some of us are not ready to enter. We still have all the fears of life and burden of sin to shed. So, we wander in the wilderness for a time.

Here is the outline for this tract.
    1.0 Entering the Promised Land (1:1 – 5:12)
Joshua accepts the challenge to lead the nation of Israel. The Israelites recommit to God by obediently setting out across the Jordan.

As Christians, we need to cross over from the old life to the new. Put off our selfish desires and press on to possess all God has for us. We need to have God's strength and courage of faith to live the new life.

    2.0 Conquering the Promised Land (5:13 – 12:24)
Joshua and the army of Israel move through the land cleansing it of wickedness by destroying every trace of idol worship.

Encounters with evil is inevitable. We should be as merciless as Israel in destroying sin in our lives.

    3.0 Dividing the Promised Land (13:1 – 24:33)
The Israelites were prone to wander from the Lord. They had seen God deliver them from many enemies and miraculously provide for their needs. Joshua urges them to continue to follow the Lord and worship him alone.
We also must continually renew our commitment to obey God above all other authority and to worship Him alone.
